Coherent structures in turbulent boundary layers with adverse pressure gradients

چکیده
The coherent structures in turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) subjected to adverse pressure gradients (APGs) were investigated by analyzing a database of direct numerical simulations. The equilibrium adverse pressure gradient flows were established by using a power law free-stream distribution. The population trends of the spanwise vortices show that the outer regions of the APG TBLs are densely populated with hairpin-like vortices. These vortical structures induce low-momentum regions in the middle of the boundary layers, which result in an outer peak in the Reynolds shear stress. The 3-D features of the hairpin packets were deduced from their spatial characteristics in the spanwise-wall-normal plane. The conditionally averaged velocity fields show that there are counter-rotating v − w swirling motions that represent cross-sectional evidences of the packets. Moreover, two-point correlations and linear stochastic estimations were used to provide statistical information about the hairpin packet motions in the crossstream planes of the APG TBLs.

متن کاملA parametric study of adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers
There are many open questions regarding the behaviour of turbulent boundary layers subjected to pressure gradients and this is confounded by the large parameter space that may affect these flows. While there have been many valuable investigations conducted within this parameter space, there are still insufficient data to attempt to reduce this parameter space. Here, we consider a parametric stu...

The turbulent potential model is a RANS model that avoids modeling the Reynolds stress tensor. As a result it has the ability to obtain the physical accuracy of Reynolds stress transport equation models at a cost and complexity comparable to popular two equation models. The model’s ability to predict channel flow, free-shear layers, homogeneous shear flow, stagnation point flow, backward facing...

Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of developing turbulent boundary layers have been performed using a Finite Volume method with a locally refined grid near the wall. In the case of a zero pressure gradient boundary layer it is shown that the use of local grid refinement saves a considerable amount of computational resources. The method is then applied to an adverse pressure gradient boundary l...
